Serena Williams’ Coach Patrick Mouratoglou Offers Insight on Unique Traits of Daniil Medvedev

After putting up a tough fight against Novak Djokovic in the finals of Rolex Paris Masters 2021, Daniil Medvedev would want to make slight adjustments to his game as he struggled with Djokovic’s change in tactic in the final where he introduced serve-and-volley on his serve more often than not.

Despite the defeat, Medvedev made sure to give the Serb a run for his money before bowing out in three sets. The Russian, who is largely considered a baseline defensive player, was hailed by Patrick Mouratoglou as the French coach revealed why it was difficult to hit winners against Medvedev.

Yes Daniil moves very well but more than that, the way he reads the game and anticipates is what makes it so difficult to hit winners against him”, tweeted Mouratoglou.

Ahead of the Paris Masters, both Djokovic and Medvedev trained together at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Biot, France.

After an entertaining US Open final that witnessed the Serb losing out to Medvedev in straight sets, it was a perfect revenge for the 20-time Grand Slam champion in Paris as he denied the Russian’s hopes of reaching the year-end no.1 ranking even before the championship match.

During the matchup against Djokovic in Paris today, Medvedev was able to dominate the first set as he kept the Serb on his toes and kept hitting winners from the baseline as and when there was a chance.

Medvedev’s efforts were not sufficient against Djokovic in Paris Masters 2021 finals

As the first set was clinched by the Russian, Djokovic took the drivers seat in the second and got himself comfortable on-court. The Serb’s movement was exquisite as he began to play the volley game and ultimately succeeded to win the second set, 6-3.

The deciding set was all about Medvedev holding his serve against a relentless Novak. While both the players managed to hold their serves in the initial few games, it was time for Medvedev to have a bad service game, thanks to Djokovic’s brilliant returns from both the forehand and backhand wings.

The Russian immediately lost yet another service game and gave Djokovic the chance to serve for the Paris Masters crown. Adding a little twist to the tale, Medvedev broke back and the match got interesting again.

However, the reigning US Open champion failed to hold his serve once again and lost the third set and the final to the 20-time major champion, 4-6,6-3,6-3.

The World Tour Finals in Turin is when fans get to see both these players in action again as they promise yet another enthralling matchup to finish an exciting 2021 ATP season.
