It seems that Danny Willett has made his birthday extra special this year. As the Ryder Cup 2020 has wrapped up, the golf schedule is starting up again. The European Tour is back with the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where Danny Willett has emerged victorious.

The victory became even more special for Willet as it came on his birthday October the 3rd. Willett won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship by two strokes, impressing everyone with his win. However, Willett’s win has also created a European Tour victory. Let’s take a look at this unique record.

Danny Willett’s birthday victory was really special

According to reports, Danny Willett is the first player on the European Tour to win on their birthday since 2004.

He secured a three-shot lead heading into the final round, which took place at the forever iconic Old Course at St Andrew’s. Willett scored four-under 68, finishing 18-under par.

This was his first win since the 2019 BMW PGA Championship win. Additionally, this is also his eighth professional win.

Willett went up against powerful players, like Tyrrell Hatton and Joakim Lagergren, and defeated them to win the title. Hatton, who has won the event twice before, was one of the favorites to win the title. He shot 67, while Lagergren shot 66.

Danny Willett was emotional after his win at Alfred Dunhill

“It’s been a good week,” Willett said, emotional about his win. “Things have been good. The results haven’t really been there, but, you know, deep down inside things are pretty close”. 

Willett’s only top 10 finish this year came at the Puerto Rico Open. He added that while it was a “relatively average year,” this was a big win. Now, as they progress through the season, Willett will be hoping to get some more wins.

Along with a tough year on the course, Willett has also suffered health-wise. He tested positive for COVID-19 in March and then had his wisdom teeth removed in April.

However, now, after winning a tournament on his birthday, Willett would be full of confidence. And one can only hope that the veteran golfer has a great year ahead.
