Aljamain Sterling became the bantamweight champion of the UFC after Petr Yan landed an illegal knee on ‘The Funk Master’ at UFC 259. Until the illegal knee in the fourth round, Petr Yan was ahead on the scorecards, which made the entire situation even worse.
Soon after getting the green light for no substantial damage during the bout, Aljamain Sterling took to Instagram to share a photo with his family posing with the belt.
Since then, ‘The Funkmaster’ has become one of the most polarising fighters in the UFC. The 32-year-old has been incessantly trolling Petr Yan fans for their hostile behavior towards him.
Sterling has been sharing photos and videos of himself sitting with the belt to keep his critics enraged. The New York native has done quite a good job of keeping the entire MMA community riled up.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Aljamain Sterling explained why he began antagonizing his critics in the first place,
“Well, at that point, people were hating on me for walking around with a belt that I never walked around with. I’m like, ‘I’m confused, I left the belt in the cage, you showed up at my house and I’m being trolled. You know what? Let’s flip the script and get people more riled up. Let’s fan the flame a little bit, you know? If this is what people are going to give me shit for, I might as well have fun with it instead of trying to ‘NO, I’m sorry guys, it wasn’t my fault. Screw you guys, like, go f**k yourself. That’s how I felt, you know.”
One can understand where Sterling is coming from. After all, it wasn’t because of him that fight ended the way it did. Sterling will look to make a statement in the rematch and hopefully gain some of his fans back.

Can Aljamain Sterling become a dominant champion?
Aljamain Sterling is one of the most versatile fighters in the bantamweight division as of now. The 32-year-old is on a five-fight win streak (excluding his recent bout) with wins against top fighters such as Cordy Sandhagen and Pedro Munhoz.
If Sterling can get past Petr Yan at UFC 267, there will be several exciting fights waiting for him. Perhaps a fight with former two-time champion, TJ Dillashaw, will be next.
However, to stay on top, Sterling will have to make some additions to his arsenal. His striking certainly has room for improvement and would make him a better all-around threat. An extremely talented and skillful fighter, Sterling has what it takes to be a dominant champion.
