Patrick Reed cited an ankle injury and withdrew from The Northern Trust 2021. Reed is not playing at Liberty National trying to secure a Top 70 spot in the FedExCup playoffs as he’s already in a comfortable spot in the rankings. However, the 31-year-old shared unfortunate news ahead of the second leg of the FedExCup playoffs at the Caves Valley Golf Club.
Reed has played 22 events this year and he competed in four consecutive events from The Open Championship 2021 to the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. That includes a trip across the ocean to Tokyo, Japan, where the Olympic competition was held.
A tight schedule burned Patrick Reed out, and he was left without proper fitness for the Wyndham Championship and The Northern Trust. Reed was supposed to play both these events but withdrew due to different reasons.
He did not play Wyndham due to fatigue and travel-related reasons, while an ankle injury forced the nine-time PGA Tour winner out of The Northern Trust.
Now, Reed has announced his withdrawal from the BMW championship as well, with unfortunate news.
Patrick Reed is diagnosed with bilateral interstitial pneumonia
As The Northern Trust was moving ahead with its Monday finish, Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis reported the grim news of Patrick Reed withdrawing from his third straight PGA Tour event. This time, it’s the second leg of the 2021 FedExCup playoffs.
Reed released a statement posting that he is now doing okay after being diagnosed with double pneumonia. Moreover, he stated that his ankle feels good as well. Lewis spoke to Reed’s wife Justine, who informed him that “it got really bad very quickly.”
“I’m on the road to recovery,” Reed said. “Once I’m cleared from the doctors, I look forward to returning. I wish you all the best and I can’t wait to get back out there.”
