Microsoft’s Inspiration Behind the Xbox Series S/X Design

Microsoft may have revealed the Xbox Series S and X but there is a lot more to the story than we know. Designing next-gen consoles that users will continue to enjoy for many years is not an easy task. Add to that the pressure that comes from the competitors racing alongside and we can begin to imagine just how difficult it is.

Apart from the hardware specifications and capabilities of the Series X and S, the design of the consoles has attracted a lot of attention. Microsoft shared their inspiration for the design of the next-gen consoles in a blog post today. Read on to find out how the team put together Series S and X, keeping their faithful fanbase in mind.

Designing the Xbox Series X/S

Xbox One released way back in the last decade, when Obama was still President. The design research for Series X had started in 2017. The Xbox team did ground research to understand what the gamers wanted.

In September of 2017, the design and research teams went out and visited our customers, bringing with them some prototype form factors for what would become the Xbox Series X. What they found when sharing their vision of what a next-generation console could be was that gamers were most excited about something that felt new and different, but also easily fit into their homes wherever they played.”

The Series S is a cheaper version of the standard X, but its functionality will differ as well. The idea was to create an Xbox that is portable and playable in environments never imagined before.

Designing in this flexibility gives our customers options on how they configure their gaming setup- the compact nature of the Series S means it will fit in, and travel more easily between, more environments than any Xbox before. It easily slips in a backpack or small bag and lets you take a next-generation console-quality gaming experience with you.

Use of intelligent geometry

The design team sought to introduce a revolutionary concept with the Series X design. The idea was to offer something to the patrons that would naturally complement the aesthetics of their homes.

The geometric forms and bold details of the products lend themselves naturally to being expressed with 2D elements and gives the devices their aesthetic and personality. The team named this approach to console design “Intelligent Geometry.

A fair amount of thought seems to have gone in designing these next-gen consoles by Microsoft. The console war is still on, with the PlayStation 5 reportedly sold out in their pre-order bracket. This November we will see the ultimate showdown between the two giants. The question is, who will come out on top?
