Petra Kvitova is finally heading home to Europe after staying back in Indian Wells for the past week. The Indian Wells cancelation was followed by the suspension of the Miami Open. All this due to the coronavirus pandemic across the globe.
Players who were to participate in the Indian Wells stayed back in the city even after the cancelation of the event. There was a simple reason behind that; the Miami Open organizers had stated they would carry on with the event.
What this meant was that the players, naturally, decided it would be better to stay there until the next event instead of traveling back to their respective home countries. However, after the organizers canceled the Miami Open as well, the players were in a spot.
Here is the official statement from the Miami Masters organizers.

Petra Kvitova says goodbye
A lot of European players started to find it increasingly difficult to get back to their countries because of the whole COVID-19 fiasco. Petra Kvitova, who is from the Czech Republic, was ready to head back there today, leaving Indian Wells behind.
She kept her fans updated on how she spent her time while in Indian Wells as everyone waited for the Miami news. Even in times of such uncertainty and turmoil, Petra was thinking about her fans.

In her goodbye tweet, Kvitova had some intelligent observations to share with us.
It’s time to leave Indian Wells and head back to Europe. It has been a strange week here with no tournament, but we are tennis players and our job is far less important than those on the frontline. We will play tennis again and in the meantime, let’s look after each other 🤗 pic.twitter.com/ySkNxT2zMF

As you can see, Petra rightly asserts that tennis can wait until the health and wellness of the people is secure. Tennis, as she mentions, will carry on once this episode is behind us all.
As it stands, the threat of the ATP and WTA Tour officials scrapping the season altogether is quite high. Unless the countries, the world over, are able to contain the outbreak of the virus it is unlikely we will see much tennis in the following months.
