Kevin Lee Misses Weight by a Huge Margin at UFC Brasilia

The weight cutting demons of Kevin Lee is back to haunt him yet again. The American weighed in at two and a half pounds heavier than the lightweight limit for his main event fight at UFC Brasilia.

UFC President Dana White announced that the fight will be a catchweight bout. UFC Fight Night 170 is also facing the brunt of the outrage caused by Coronavirus. It will be the first major UFC event that will take place behind closed doors. This was put into effect after the governor of Brasilia Ibaneis Rocha banned all mass gatherings of people keeping in mind the safety of the citizens.

A portion of Lee’s purse will go to his opponent, Charles Oliveira. This is not the first time that “The Motown Phenom” has missed weight. Before this, he had missed weight in his fight against Edson Barboza. Despite missing weight by two pounds, he went on to finish Barboza in the fifth round via a TKO.

Kevin Lee hasn’t won back-to-back fights since 2017

At one point in time, it looked like Kevin Lee would have a bright future in the stacked lightweight division. However, a three-fight stretch that started with him being submitted by Tony Ferguson derailed his fantastic run. He then went on to miss weight against Barboza, following which he lost to Al Iaquinta by a unanimous decision.

In a desperation heave to save his career, Lee went up a weight class to fight Rafael dos Anjos. A former lightweight himself, dos Anjos submitted Lee via an arm triangle. He then came back to lightweight and fought Gregor Gillespie. He won the fight via a head kick KO that earned him Performance of the Night honours as well.

His opponent, Charles Oliveira, has a history of missing weights himself. The Brazilian started his career as a lightweight. He dropped down to 145 pounds after going through 2 losses and 1 NC during a three-fight stretch in 2011. It was at featherweight that he missed the weight by as much as 10 pounds during a fight with Ricardo Lamas.

However, he has been shining since his return to lightweight. He has amassed a total of six consecutive victories. A win over an overweight Kevin Lee can give a serious boost to his chances of fighting for the belt.
