“The Plan Is…” – Aston Martin F1 Boss Answers Rumors Surrounding Mercedes Engine Split

It has been no secret that Aston Martin has been building itself up for the 2022 season. Amongst new personnel and infrastructure, there had also been rumors of the team cutting ties with Mercedes to make their own engines. Otmar Szafnauer puts an end to the rumors.

When Szafnauer was asked if Lance Stroll hopes that the team manufactures their own engines, Szafnauer gave a very nuanced answer. “Never say never.” However, the boss was quick to dispel the rumors surrounding Mercedes.

The team principal explained: “We have a long-term contract with Mercedes and we are happy with the power train that we have. They’ve served us well over the years, and the plan is to stay with Mercedes.”

So far, the Mercedes PU hasn’t been a problem for the team. And maybe, as long as it’s not broken, for Aston Martin, there may be no need to fix it.

Aston Martin Boss contradicts earlier reports

Before Szafnauer revealed the team’s continuation with Mercedes, the rumors began with reports of the team showing interest in Audi and Porsche. The word on the grapevine was that Stroll wanted to be able to produce his own engine, almost like what Red Bull has on its plans.

The Canadian would have thought better of the decision as manufacturing your own engine would be an immense cost. Further, with Aston Martin rebuilding itself almost from scratch, this would be an unnecessary cost to bear.

However, Stroll could find a partner with a good manufacturing company, especially when Audi and Porsche have been showing interest. Now, as the truth has been revealed, Mercedes may have been the safer bet to place.

Nonetheless, the next five years will be one to look forward to as the team undergoes this immense makeover. With Lance Stroll adamant to make Aston Martin a team worthy of competing for championships, it would be magical to see the dream come true.
