Whincup wins wet and wild V8 race in Sydney

Jamie Whincup won Sunday night's Supercars race in slippery conditions in what proved to be a tough outing for series leader Shane van Gisbergen.

A soaking wet Eastern Creek provided challenges for the field, but it was Whincup who handled it best.

It was first win in 18 races, and the 124th for his career.

Anton De Pasquale finished second ahead of third-placed Chaz Mostert.

The win sees Whincup make huge inroads towards his Red Bull teammate van Gisbergen's series lead, with the latter finishing 23rd.

Van Gisbergen struggled in the conditions, going off after an early restart before being penalised for a pit stop breach.

The series returns to Eastern Creek again next weekend.

"Car lit up off the start, which was the main thing, and I had clean air," Whincup told Supercars.com afterwards.

"It's a bit of a weird one to celebrate, wins don't come very often in this day and age.

"I'm not sure what it was, but my thing just hooked up... because it was dry when we rocked up to the grid, there were a few dry spots.

"So I hit the dry spots, and I took off."
