“If You Compare Him to Roger or Rafa…”: Former World No.1 on What Novak Djokovic Wants

World No.1 Novak Djokovic recently emerged as the winner of the Rolex Paris Masters 2021. The Serbian legend took his revenge on Daniil Medvedev, who denied him the Calendar Slam, defeating him at the US Open 2021.

With this triumph, Novak Djokovic made sure that he would end the 2021 season as the World No.1 player. He has had a great season so far and managed to win three Grand Slam titles during this period.

Mats Wilander applauds the brilliant comeback by Novak Djokovic

In a recent interview with Eurosport.co.uk, former World No.1 Mats Wilander disclosed that he initially thought that Djokovic could never recover after his US Open 2021 final loss. He thought so because the Serbian is in his mid-thirties and thus, it would be difficult for anyone to regain momentum. However, Nole astonished him after making an incredible comeback at the Paris Masters 2021.

“There was a possibility in my mind that Novak Djokovic was not going to be the same player ever again after the US Open. Because he’s 34 years old. He’s pushing 35 and losing finals like that. It could break your confidence… He’s back. He’s playing great again,” said Wilander in the interview.

Wilander highlighted that Djokovic is back in form and is once again playing some fantastic tennis on the court.

“Has his goals set on definitely being the best player”- Wilander on Djokovic

In the same interview, Wilander pointed out that Djoker certainly has the goal of becoming the best tennis player in the world, surpassing his arch-rivals, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. However, he also stated that for the short-term goal, he wants to end every year at the top of every other player.

“He has his goals set on definitely being the best player in the world, but more importantly, being the best player in the world at the end of this year, being the best player in the world at the end of next year, and as long as he plays, he wants to be the best player in the world if you compare him to Roger [Federer] or Rafa [Nadal] or Rod Laver or Bjorn Borg… I think for him, if he’s playing tennis, he wants to be the best in the world at this moment,” added the 7-time Grand Slam champion.

Novak Djokovic will begin his ATP Finals 2021 campaign against Casper Ruud on Monday. Will he be able to win the tournament for a record equalling sixth time this year?
