“Likes to Be Hard on Himself”: Eugenie Bouchard on Andy Murray’s Tough Loss to Alexander Zverev at Indian Wells 2021

Over the past few months, the tennis world has been given the chance to witness vintage Andy Murray at several matches on the ATP tour. Even though Murray ended up losing most matches, it was still heartening to see that his tennis takes the drivers seat over discussions surrounding his form.

At the BNP Paribas Open, Murray defeated Adrian Mannarino and Carlos Alcaraz to face Alexander Zverev in the third round. Considering the recent form of Zverev, the Brit was outplayed despite him putting up a solid effort throughout the match.

After losing the first set, Andy fought hard to take the second to a tie-breaker. Even the breaker was close battle before Zverev managed to bring out his best tennis to clinch a straight-sets victory over Murray.

Despite the defeat, the Brit has a lot of positives to take out from this match, with the relentless score-board pressure he put on Zverev being one.

Talking about Andy’s performance against the German, Eugenie Bouchard, who teamed up Tennis Channel to cover Indian Wells event, mentioned that Murray’s moment was top-notch.

I know Andy likes to be hard on himself. He tends to be negative. But, I think there are a lot of positives to take away. I watched that match and I thought that movement looked some of his best it’s been since his hip surgery”, commented the Canadian.

Murray visibly frustrated after defeat to Alexander Zverev in BNP Paribas Open

Even as he waved goodbye to the Indian Wells fans, Murray could be seen frustrated with himself as he made his disappointment pretty clear. This shows the fire and the confidence of Andy regarding his form on-court.

Bouchard continued, “To compete with no.4 in the world, two tight sets, over two hours. That’s the level he wants to be playing at”.

Although it was Zverev who came out on top and achieved a personal record of defeating big players like Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, and Murray at-least once in his career, Murray can at-least be relieved that if he maintains the same form next year, he can cause more top-seed upsets at slams.
