Former World No.1 Andy Murray recently lost to Diego Schwartzman at the European Open 2021. Even though he won a tough match against Frances Tiafoe, he couldn’t battle past the Argentine player. The final scoreline of the match was 4-6, 6(6)-7(8).
Even though Andy Murray is not getting the desired results, he is trying to compete in as many tournaments as possible. Interestingly, the Vienna Open 2021 will be his sixth tournament after the US Open 2021.
Andy Murray believes that he has improved his performances over the last few weeks
In a recent interview to atptour.com, Murray revealed that his gameplay and match performances have improved since the grass court season. He mentioned that he played well at the US Open 2021 and even though he has not been perfect, he is becoming better and better as a player.
“It has been better. From the grass season to the US Open, I played well. I played better tennis at the US Open. Since then, it has been consistently better each week. It has not been perfect, but most of the matches I have had chances and opportunities in, which certainly wasn’t the case in the grass season and some of the matches I played before the US Open,” said Murray.
The 3-time Grand Slam champion highlighted that there are very few players who can compete with the top-five players despite having a metal hip. Although he feels proud of himself, he wants to work even harder and reach back to his winning days.
“I don’t think there are many players who would be able to compete with the top five players with a metal hip. I am proud of myself for putting myself in a position to compete with those guys. But ultimately if I want to get back to somewhere close to the level I was at before I need to be winning those matches,” added the former World No.1.

“Need to be a bit more clinical”- Murray
In the same interview, the British star also introspected himself and admitted that he needs to be more clinical and ruthless. He clearly tried to hint that despite improving his gameplay, he needs to capitalize all his opportunities.
“I need to be a bit more clinical and ruthless when my opportunities come. That was one of the things when I was right at the top of the game was a strong part of my game and I need to get back to that. When my opportunities come, I am going to take them and be clinical,” concluded the 2-time Vienna Open winner.
Andy Murray will begin his Vienna Open 2021 campaign against Hubert Hurkacz tomorrow. Will he be able to succeed in Vienna for the third time this year?
