“Greatest Achievement”: Dominic Thiem Lauds Emma Raducanu’s Qualifier to Winner Journey at US Open 2021

Emma Raducanu astonished everyone with her run at the US Open. The 18-year-old British sensation did the unimaginable as she cruised to her maiden Grand Slam all the way from qualifying. Dominic Thiem, the former US Open Champion is the latest addition to the long list of admirers of Emma’s talents.

Thiem called Raducanu’s accomplishment at the US Open “one of the greatest achievements in women’s sport,”. The former US Open champion also praised the Brit for taking her game to “another level” in the final.

She became the first player to win a major title after coming through the qualifying rounds. She became the eighth-youngest woman to win a major in the process.

Raducanu also became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977. Raducanu won 10 matches in a row to win the US Open, including three in qualifying and seven in the main event.

“For me this is one of the greatest achievements in women’s sport. It was an unbelievable journey, you just have to look at the numbers,” Dominic Thiem said during an interview. “She didn’t lose one set the whole tournament. She came from qualifying and she didn’t even play one tiebreak. We have probably never seen anything like this before.”

On her journey to the throne, Raducanu showed utter resilience and won all of her matches in straight sets. The Brit started the competition at a world ranking of 150. After claiming the title at Flushing Meadows, her rank jumped to world number 23.

Dominic Thiem was impressed by Raducanu’s technique and on-court moves. He believes this to be one of the greatest breakthroughs of all time. The Austrian himself was the defending champion in the men’s singles but couldn’t participate due to a wrist injury.
