The Brazilian National Football Team retained their Olympic gold medal with a triumph against Spain in the finals of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The team also captured the prize at the Rio Olympics 2016.
The Selecaos went ahead first after Cunha brought down and slotted a Dani Alves pass. Forward Richarlison missed a penalty in the 39th minute of the contest. But the agony for the fans didn’t last long as Cunha gave the team the much-desired lead on the cusp of halftime. Spain could not cause too many problems for its opponents from the very beginning.
But they got level on terms in the 61st minute. Mikel Oyarzabal converted a left-foot volley. The assist was provided by the substitute, Carlos Soler.

The game headed to the extra times after it ended 1-1 during the 90 minutes. Brazil brought on former FC Barcelona player, Malcolm. He proved to be pivotal. He chased down a cross-field ball from Antony and outran Real Madrid CF defender, Jesus Vallejo, to get it. The forward kept his composure and slotted past Unai Simon to give his country the lead, which eventually proved to be deciding.
Antony deserves his credit too as he played a beautiful pass in Malcolm’s way. Nevertheless, the Zenit star’s goal wasn’t replied to by Spain.
What’s next for Brazil after the gold in Tokyo Olympics 2020?
Well, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is on the horizon. But one might expect the superstar names to be back in action to prepare for the tournament. However, the youngsters have made their points as well in Japan. There will be a few names up for discussion next time the national team is selected.
Also, the veteran captain of the team, Dani Alves proved his class yet again. Despite being 38, the legendary right-back once again showcased his leadership qualities. Whether he remains an integral part of the squad in the next year will be interesting to see.
Fans want to see the Selecaos get their hands on the holy grail of football again. The 5-time world champions last won the World Cup in 2002. But, after a successful campaign at the 2020 Olympics, fans can expect more glory next year.
