“I’m so proud of all the suffering, I’m so proud of me”- Mayar Sherif

Going into the tournament, Mayar had merely one WTA level win to her name. However, she announced her arrival after she beat the tournament’s top seed, Alize Cornet. Ever since, she has put on some show on the court, playing with sheer authority and outclassing her opponents. Even the biggest game of her career so far, the semi-final clash, was no different from her performance all week.

Gathering her feelings post her historic feat, exclaiming what the moment meant for her, she said, “I mean, I’m so proud of where I came from, I’m so proud of all the suffering, how hard it was to get to where I am today, being from Egypt, I can’t imagine being here one day. I mean, it’s very emotional. I’m so proud of me.”

She further credited her family back home and everyone who’s played a part in shaping the narrative of her career. “I’m so proud of everyone that’s been behind me, and everyone in my country, my family, my coaches, my team, it’s so nice to always do something first, i mean, I can’t say anything more,” Mayar said.

One for the fans

As her fairytale in the tournament continues, Mayar was humble enough to credit the ’12th man’. Packing the stadium were fans who may or may not have been cheering for her, as she played against the home favorite. Regardless, they were enough to push the Egyptian over the line. Rightly so, she expressed her gratitude for their appearance, despite the challenging times of the pandemic.

She said, “It was not easy to play today, you guys were great for her. I mean, it’s so better to have you guys than to have no one. We really appreciate having you in every match, it’s been great, especially the last period has been tough. So really, thank you for coming every day.”

As she now marches on to claim the historic title, she has an entire nation rooting for her. Surely, the history-maker will give it her all and put on yet another enthralling show. However, will Mayar continue in the form of her life heading into the finals or will her fairytale meet its realistic unfortunate end?
