Swans' premiership hopes cop major blow

Sydney's premiership hopes have taken a cruel blow with young gun Nick Blakey to miss the remainder of the season due to injury.

Blakey hobbled off the field during the third quarter of Sydney's win over North Melbourne last weekend, and now the club has revealed he won't take any further part this year after scans confirmed a crack to his right fibula.

The timing couldn't have come at a worse period for the 21-year-old, who had re-established his position in the squad as a key defensive player and runner of the ball.

Blakey's form was a hot topic early in the season after he was dropped from the side before finding his way back in under a new role.

"Nick had played his way into some really strong form over the last two months, providing exciting run and carry for us out of defence," said club footy boos Charlie Gardiner.

"It is extremely disappointing to see him struck down with this injury at this point in the season."

"While there is no firm timeline on his return from injury at this stage, we are confident he will be ready well in time for the start of preseason."

With one round remaining, the Swans this season have locked in a top-six spot on the AFL ladder after having missed out on finals footy over the past two years.
