Canelo Alvarez looks likely to appear in action this year again. However, a change of the date can influence his selection of opponents. If the Mexican star returns on September 18, WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol can be the most viable option. Meanwhile, Alvarez holds three world titles at 168 lbs, and squaring off against Bivol would urge either man to shift a weight class.
Meanwhile, Matchroom kingpin Eddie Hearn has teased a possibility of hosting the bout at catchweight, i.e. 168-175 lbs. This will complicate the titles put at stake. Nevertheless, Hearn seemed optimistic while revealing his potential plans regarding Alvarez’s future.
Speaking with Boxing Scene, Eddie Hearn said, “We are talking about the Dmitry Bivol fight at the minute. If we get that over the line, it is only even weeks away. The Plant fight is not happening… for now, but if he goes September 18, it is likely to be Bivol. We need to get moving.”
“I think it would be some kind of catchweight. Bivol has been talking about going to 168 for some time. He just wants some kind of big opportunity.”
Before all of these, IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant was scheduled to meet the three-belt unified champion, Canelo Alvarez, for all the 168 lbs titles. The two had verbally agreed, and official confirmation was also in progress. But a few contractual complications and financial demands might have changed the flow.

Nevertheless, Plant’s social media posts reflect he is still interested in the scrap. But apart from his IBF championship status, ‘Sweet Hands’ offers almost nothing to Alvarez’s legacy. Hence, the Mexican star might have changed his plans.
What’s next for Canelo Alvarez?
Following two wins in 2021, Alvarez now holds the WBC, WBA, WBO, and Ring super middleweight titles under his name. Hence, it might provoke him to remain in the division. But the P4P king has shown interest in shifting weight classes and it broadens his scope of bagging bigger fights.
Simultaneously, Alvarez’s stardom and cash-cow personality has urged several fighters from the middleweight division to call him out. Despite not receiving proper attention, several 160 lbs champions are still aiming for the shot. Hence, it all comes down to Canelo Alvarez regarding whom he would like to go against next.
