Jon Rahm has made an excellent comeback in the 2021 Open Championship after falling behind in the opening round. Even though he is not right at the top of the leaderboard, he is very much in contention. He is currently T6 with a score of -7 going into the final round and is 5-strokes behind the leader.
Rahm had a phenomenal round two as he remained bogey-free and carded six birdies. And this is where he got himself back in the tournament. But a decent third round with five birdies and three bogeys slightly held back his momentum and stopped him from getting into the top 5 on Saturday. However, given the conditions and hole locations, Jon has given himself a splendid chance of going for the trophy on Sunday.
“Those were some of the hardest pin locations,” says Rahm
In the post-round interview, Jon Rahm explained the difficulties of the course and his play at the Royal St. George’s.
“Really good round. Played good golf. Had some really good highlights. And, again, because of the weather conditions, it’s easy to think it could have been a little bit better, but the pin locations were no joke. I don’t know if on TV you could appreciate it, but those are some of the hardest pin locations collectively I’ve ever seen.” Said the 2021 U.S. Open Champion.”
And that is a fact. The pin locations were daunting as no player scored below 65 for the day. Almost 95% of players shot -1 or -2 for the day, and Jon Rahm was one of them. He scored 68 for the day and remained -7 for the event.

Jon Rahm summarises his moving day round at the 2021 Open Championship
The 26-year-old continued, “On a golf course, that’s not easiest it can get tricky. You can hit the right shots and give yourself chances. But even hitting the right shots you can have some funky putts with difficult breaks and difficult speeds, right?”
“So scores show it. 2-under is a much better round than I thought it was for a while. And being picky, was there a couple of shots, second shot on 1, how I played the 7th hole, and second shot into 13. We’re talking about 1 and on 13, two holes, one with a 9-iron and pitching wedge,” Rahm added.
“Both of them, I missed the green, where I could have to give myself a better chance and maybe avoid that bogey I made on 1, right? Could have been one shot better and have a better shot tomorrow. Besides that, it was a pretty good round of golf.”
Now, going into the last round on Sunday, the world no.2, Jon Rahm, is five strokes behind the leader. And he will look to continue the momentum and will expect a play similar to Friday to give himself a chance of lifting his second major title of the year.
