Coco Gauff Fails to Match Maria Sharapova’s Feat as Angelique Kerber Stops Her at Wimbledon Championships 2021

17-year-old American Coco Gauff is undisputedly the most promising teenage tennis professional active today. After her sensational run to the Round of 16 in 2019, she again reached the pre-quarters at Wimbledon Championships 2021. Coco faced the 2018 winner Angelique Kerber to reach the quarterfinals and enter the history books of Wimbledon.

Before coming into this match, the young American had outlasted Francesca Jones, Elena Vesnina, and Kaja Juvan in straight sets. After an impressive start to the grass Major, the question was whether she could keep up her winning ways to make it into the last eight for the first time in Wimbledon?

Also, if she had, Coco would hav become the youngest female player since Maria Sharapova to complete the feat at 17 years and 119 days old. Notably, the retired Russian remains the youngest female Wimbledon champion, when in 2004 she lifted the trophy at 17 years and 76 days.

A month ago, the 17-year-old had reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal of her young career at Roland-Garros. Still, after scraping set points in the first set, Gauff lost to the eventual winner of the tournament Barbora Krejcikova 6-7(6), 3-6.

But this time around, the American teenager was riding high on confidence and class. Not to mention how the grass surface elevates her groundstrokes and her swift moment on the court.

On the other side of the net, the 33-year-old German came with the Bad Homburg Open title in Wimbledon. Despite her inconsistency during the start of the season, Kerber seemed ready to make the difference on grass.

Undoubtedly, both of them deserved a place in the quarterfinals of the Championships. But it was Angelique who apparently wanted it more and played with sheer determination throughout this match.

The German hit numerous out-wordly winners that left the young American standing and admiring. Kerber would now meet Czech professional Karolina Muchova in the QFs.

Additionally, Coco failed to become the youngest American tennis professional to reach Wimbledon QFs since Jennifer Capriati did in 1993. The former World No.1 and three-time Grand Slam champion had done it at 17 years and 97 days.
