Sex assault charge cost Hayne $500k NRL deal

Jarryd Hayne was meant to sign a $500,000 NRL contract with the St George Illawarra Dragons the day that he was charged with sexual assault.

The former Australian representative made the revelation during his sentencing at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, having been found guilty of two counts of sexual intercourse without consent after meeting up with a woman on NRL grand final night in September 2018.

He was charged in November 2018 and it cost him half a million dollars. His conviction will now cost him his freedom, with a prison sentence due to be confirmed at 2.30pm AEST on Thursday.

"Because the media were involved, the frenzy that it went in with the charges, I didn't hear from them (the Dragons) after that," Hayne said in the stand, per Nine court reporter Tiffiny Genders.

Hayne, a dual Dally M Medallist, played 214 NRL games. He shot to superstardom with the Parramatta Eels, played in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers, then returned to rugby league on a $1.2 million per season deal with the Gold Coast Titans. He also played 11 Tests for Australia and 23 State of Origin games for NSW.

He last played in the NRL in 2018, the year of his sexual assault arrest. His victim on Thursday delivered a harrowing victim impact statement in court.

"What I experienced was horrible, nobody should ever have to feel that way. I am destroyed and damaged but I am still standing," she said.
