NRL great Gorden Tallis believes the game's powerbrokers need to consider other ways to curb player behaviour.
NRL boss Andrew Abdo has moved to increase the maximum fine for misbehaving players to $100,000 after the game's governing body was criticised for how it dealt with Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas.
Haas was fined $50,000 after he was arrested and charged for being abusive and intimidating police. Despite lifting the financial penalty for disobedient players, Broncos' legend Tallis claims hitting players in the hip-pocket hasn't worked in the past. The Maroons legend says incorporating a representative ban could be the answer.
"That's happened in the past (Meninga standing down players) and it will probably happen again moving forward, there's a standard in those jerseys," Tallis told Fox Sports.
"And there's a standard when you put on the Broncos or Titans or Cowboys, and it's what you want to see. Payne Haas probably didn't do himself any favours.
"I heard Phil Gould say that (Haas) shouldn't play Origin, and I don't disagree with that.
"If you don't start punishing them what's going to happen? It keeps on happening, and they've been getting fined.
"If you've got kids and you tell to go sit in the naughty corner and it doesn't work, you've got to try something different until they learn.
"Any time there's an off-field drama it's not nice for the game, because everybody hurts. As the Broncos, as a broadcaster, people are sick of it. I think we all know that now."
Former Penrith general manager and legendary coach Gould told the Today program, Haas has "underlying issues" that need to be addressed and banning him from playing for NSW might send the right message.
"There are underlying issues there they need to deal with because under the influence of alcohol, he will act the same way again unless its dealt with," Gould said.
"I'd like to see the NSW Rugby League suspend him from Origin football this year. We need to take some toys away from these kids and make them understand the privilege they have and the role that they play."
