Head blasted by legend after lazy dismissals

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has slammed struggling batsman Travis Head after the left-hander once again gave his wicket away against India on day three.

Head has shown a propensity to succumb after getting promising starts, and continued that trend in the second Test with innings of 38 and 17 at the MCG.

The 26-year-old was left to lament an unnecessary waft outside off-stump off Mohammed Siraj in the second innings, and Chappell said he had seen enough.

"He hasn't convinced me at any point that he is good enough for Test cricket," he told Wide World of Sports.

Travis Head

"The thing that I'd say about Travis Head is, as a top order batsman, you can't be vulnerable in so many ways.

"If I'm looking at him as an opponent, I'm thinking there are quite a few ways we can get this guy out.

"He was almost out first ball against the short delivery, he's got a problem with that, he's got a problem with nicking into the slips, he has trouble with the spinners, I can see ways there that an off-spinner like Ashwin would be confident in getting him out.

"As a top order batsman, you can't be vulnerable in that many areas."

Joe Burns failed again in the second innings of the Boxing Day Test.

Another failure to register a score of over 50 has Head on the chopping block alongside struggling opener Joe Burns, and Chappell said he would prefer young gun Cam Green to hold his middle order spot over Head.

"You just can't pick Burns again, you'd be doing him a disservice by picking him again," he said.

"He's shot on confidence so you've got to try something else. You've got to hope like hell that Warner is fit, that is the first thing. If he is fit, I'd be seriously thinking about bringing Marcus Harris in with Warner and sliding Wade back into the middle order.

"I think Green deserves another opportunity, but I'm not convinced Head is a Test match player. That's not just on the evidence of this series, but what I've seen overall."
