The COVID-19 pandemic caused all forms of sporting events to be suspended for a considerable amount of time. The pandemic situation eased a bit which resulted in the resumption of sports including tennis. Although every event had to follow strict rules and regulations to stop the spread of the virus. However, numerous players abstained from taking part in the tournaments. Johanna Konta adds her name to the list as she withdrew from the upcoming tournament.
The British professional pulled out from the upcoming J&T Banka Ostrava Open 2020. The tournament will be commencing on October 19. However, with the increasing cases of Corona Virus, Johanna Konta decided to withdraw from the tournament.
The 29-year-old tennis professional cited the health hazards involved in traveling right now. Konta’s decision to pull out means she won’t be seen in action this season.
“Johanna Konta’s season is over – she has pulled out of next week’s WTA event in Ostrava as she doesn’t feel comfortable traveling with Covid cases on the rise“, the tweet read.
Konta is one of the six top 20 players who have decided not to go to the tournament.
Johanna Konta this season
Johanna Konta had a pretty decent season this year. Although she had the opportunity to go further in some tournaments, she faltered and had to accept the defeat.
The former world number 4, showed some real intent storming into the semi-finals of the Western and Southern Open. Returning from the break, her performance was splendid. However, she lost to Victoria Azarenka despite having an early advantage.
Her US Open 2020 performance was not up to the mark. She faced Sorana Cirstea of Romania who hander her the round of 64 defeat. Once again Konta failed to capitalize on the early set advantage.
After the American stint was over, she traveled to Europe for the Italian Open 2020 and the French Open 2020. In Rome, she went up to the round of 16 and was defeated by Garbine Muguruza of Spain. Her promising result in Rome sparked off the lamps of expectation once again. However, disappointing everyone yet again, she took a first-round exit from the Roland Garros.
