“Serena Williams Was Never Going to Win This French Open”: Boris Becker

French Open 2020 has been witnessing upsets, but also endured a disheartening news last week. Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament citing injury concerns and she did not look happy about it. Serena is chasing her 24th grand slam, but a tennis legend reckons she is already the greatest without it.

The legendary Boris Becker is always vocal about his opinions and sometimes does not refrain from speaking out on controversial matters too. He delivered a write up about Djokovic’s disqualification from the US Open and reminisced how he foretold it when he served as the Serb’s coach in the past.

Likewise, Becker recently wrote about the ongoing events in the French Open and brought up Serena’s injury concerns as well. “Serena Williams was never going to win this French Open, but she deserves credit for making the journey to Paris and trying to compete before realising that her achilles injury made it too difficult,” Becker wrote

Moreover, the six-time grand slam champion mentioned how he is unhappy with how the women’s draw is turning out in Paris. “Where are some of the biggest names in the women’s game?” he inquired.

Boris Becker weighs on where Serena Williams stands in the all-time greats list

Serena Williams pulling out of French Open 2020 meant that she will have to wait for a few more months to come back and chase her 24th slam. It’s been more than three years since she last won a major. Her priceless 23rd title came at the 2017 Australian Open, and it’s been a tough road ever since.

A lot of people want Serena Williams to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slams. Is it only then that she can be compared as an all-time great? Boris Becker doesn’t feel so. Here’s what the German has to say about Serena chasing the elusive 24th majors title.

“Everyone talks about whether she can win a historic 24th Grand Slam but I am not convinced it is as important to her as everyone makes out. Anyone who knows a bit about it already recognises her as the greatest player ever,” Becker mentioned.

Of course, with the way Serena Williams has been playing over the years, she is truly one of the best. Her dedication and love for the game is unparalleled, making her a sensation wherever she goes. What do you think? Is Serena the greatest even without the prized 24th grand slam title?
