US Open 2020 runner-up Alexander Zverev recently lost to Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of the French Open 2020. This was the last chance for the young prodigy to win a Grand Slam in 2020. What was even more surprising was that the 23-year-old later admitted that he should not have played the game as he was not well. He even hinted at having some Covid-19 symptoms after the match.
In response, the FFT (French Tennis Federation) said that Zverev had undergone all his tests timely.
“He did not consult the tournament doctors before his match,” said the federation.
Sinner defeated Zverev 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to seal his place in the quarter-finals of the tournament. The German never looked comfortable in the match. He was often restless and even took a big break in the first game.

‘Zverev is up to date on his tests’- FFT on Alexander Zverev
Zverev clearly didn’t look 100% fit. His physio also interrupted the game a few times. He even admitted that he had a fever and was sick. But, going by the statement issued by the FFT, one can see an altogether different story.
“Zverev is up to date on his tests, which have all been negative. His last test was on September 29, with results received on September 30,” said the FFT.
They unanimously neglected the possibility of Covid-19. The federation was sure that Zverev was regular with all the tests meaning he had no such symptoms.
“Today he received a reminder for his next test, to be carried out within 5 days of the previous results,” concluded the board in its official statement.
This is surely an upset for a promising player like Zverev. Whether it was his health that let him down today or his gameplay is a difficult one to pick. But one thing is definite, the FFT doesn’t completely agree with Zverev’s claims.
On the other hand, it is a night to remember for the 19-year-old Italian. He just defeated the World No.7 at a Grand Slam. Jannik Sinner will next face 12-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros 2020.
