On Saturday, Serbian legend Novak Djokovic became the only player to claim Golden Masters crown (winning all 14 Masters 1000 titles) twice by battling past Canada’s Milos Raonic 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the Western & Southern Open.
His victory not just takes his career title count to 80, also he extends his winning streak of matches to 23 in 2020 season and that consequently that uplifts his morale for upcoming Major event US Open 2020.
Recently World Number one Novak Djokovic has been in tandem with Canada’s Vasek Pospisil and they trying to set an association to represent men’s professional tennis players. Right after his victory in New York, Djokovic cleared out that they are not working on a ‘union’ and they do not intend to boycott the present tour.
Novak Djokovic opens up on the new formation
“We are trying to have the majority of players, we know that this will probably not be the case today but we have to start somewhere. I would love to be able to count on Roger and Rafa, but I understand them. In my opinion, it is the right moment,” he said.
“Legally we are 100% safe and we are allowed to form the player association. This is not a union. This is a player association. So we are not calling for boycotts. We are not forming parallel tours,” he added. (Quotes have been translated)
Also at present, the association doesn’t serve the WTA players.
While Novak Djokovic was playing Cincinnati finals against Milos Raonic, his arch-rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal tweeted on the new player’s association sprouting in the tennis world.
“We have a bigger problem and separation and disunion is definitely not the solution,” Nadal tweeted. Following his tweet, his friend and foe Roger Federer came out in support of Rafa and shared his thoughts on the same.
I agree @RafaelNadal. These are uncertain and challenging times, but I believe it’s critical for us to stand united as players, and as a sport, to pave the best way forward. https://t.co/foAmiLVrdV
