AFL side share moving gesture amid protests

The Brisbane Lions have shown their support for Indigenous Australians and the fight against racism as protests around the country take place this weekend.

The 'Black Lives Matter' movement now extends around the world after the shocking death of American George Floyd while he was being arrested in Minneapolis. A police officer knelt on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes as he pleased 'I can't breathe'.

The Lions staff and players showed their solidarity by kneeling on the Gabba and sharing the video on social media.

Brisbane Lions players and staff gave a touching kneeling tribute

"Last night our proud Indigenous players along with Archie Smith of African American descent, addressed the team about the impact current events have had on them," the club said with the post.

"This is how the team chose to show their support to their teammates, their families, and the Indigenous community."

Indigenous Australians currently make up three per cent of the population but they also represent 30 per cent of the prison population.
