One of the game's brightest stars has created a huge story on the brink of the NRL season return after failing an ASADA drug test.
Bronson Xerri has been provisionally suspended and faces a possible multi-year ban NRL after reportedly testing positive to a number of banned substances last November.
https://twitter.com/Danny_Weidler/status/1265127340369014784?s=20The Provisional Suspension Notice reportedly asserts that Xerri returned a positive A-sample for exogenous Testosterone, Androsterone, Etiocholanolone and 5b-androstane-3a,17b-diol which are prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the NRL's Anti-Doping Policy. He was tested by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) on 25 November 2019.
According to The Daily Telegraph reporter David Riccio, Xerri had his phone confiscated by ASADA officials this morning.
The Sharks released a statement acknowledging the provisional suspension this afternoon.
"The Sharks have today been made aware of the provisional suspension handed down to Bronson Xerri under the NRL's Anti-Doping Policy," the statement reads.
"Details of that provisional suspension and alleged breach of the anti-doping policy will be outlined in an NRL Media statement to be distributed today.
"Bronson has been stood down from training and playing responsibilities while the process runs its course, which under the policy includes the opportunity to have his B-sample analysed.
"The club has been in contact with Bronson and has offered him full welfare support as he deals with this situation. The Sharks will be making no further comment on the matter."
Xerri now has the opportunity to have his B-sample analysed.
The NRL has spoken with the 19-year-old, who has been touted for representative honours after a breakout year in 2019, and advised him of the support services available to him.
