Essendon legend Tim Watson has echoed Matthew Lloyd's criticisms of the club's current culture, saying it is devoid of a winning and successful culture these days.
Lloyd caused a stir earlier in the week when he suggested that his former club had lost sight of what success looked like, having not won a single finals match since 2004.
However, current Bombers veteran David Zaharakis hit back at Lloyd's comments, saying that only the people within the club know about the culture.
"They don't have a winning successful culture at the moment, that's definitely a truism," Watson told SEN Breakfast.
"What is their culture? With culture I think you have to be part of it to understand what it might be.
"(Lloyd) wouldn't know now what the culture is inside the walls of the Essendon Football Club right now.
"From the outside, obviously they don't have the winning culture."
Despite Lloyd's comments, Zaharakis pointed to the arrival of senior coach John Worsfold, as well as coach-in-waiting Ben Rutten and assistant Blake Caracella as the drivers of the club's current culture.
"(Worsfold) came in as a culture-driven person and completely changed the club and changed the personnel within the club," Zaharakis said on Thursday.
"We've gotten rid of some people that were in the club and brought some other people in that have been awesome for us.
"Having 'Truck' (Ben Rutten) and Blake (Caracella) and Richo (Dan Richardson) come in from Richmond, such a strong club, has just put the icing on the cake in terms of what Woosha's brought in.
"They've been great for us too and we're building a really strong culture with the footy club.
"A lot of our younger group have seen that and seen how to actually behave as athletes and professional footballers.
"Everyone is buying into what we're trying to build and I think the footy club right now is in a really strong position - stronger than what it's been in the last 12 years."
