Serena Williams is one of the biggest icons in tennis history. The American legend has conquered 23 Grand Slam singles titles in her professional career. She’s just one short of equalling Margaret Court’s record of 24 titles. Williams was forced to retire in the first round of Wimbledon 2021 due to injury. Since then, the American has not featured competitively this season.
Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou recently gave his perspective on the greatest of all-time debate. He mentioned that since the birth of her child, it’s been harder for Serena to compete at the highest level.
Patrick Mouratoglou on the American’s Grand Slam drought
Patrick Mouratoglou has been in association with Serena since 2012. The American has flourished under Mouratoglou’s guidance. Recently, in an interview, when asked about Serena’s current form, Patrick Mouratoglou replied, “She still has it. The question is how much she wants it and what is she willing to do to get there?”
“She has a lot of trouble not putting her life as a mother before her life as a player which is completely understandable. I think that’s the main reason she didn’t win a Grand Slam. Her family comes first and in order to be able to do great things in one area, that area can’t come second. She is reflecting and we will see what comes out of it,” he further added.
Mouratoglou believes it’s up to Williams about the kind of balance she wants to keep between her work and her family.
Serena Williams is one short of Margaret Court’s record
The American last won a major title at the Australian Open 2017. Since then, Williams has struggled to win her 24th and equal Margaret Court’s record.
Mouratoglou concluded by saying that Serena will be considered the best tennis player of all time, as she has competed at a much higher level than Court.
