McGregor vs Diaz at UFC 196 will always be remembered as the night Diaz shocked the world. The sight of a bloodied Nate Diaz striding around the Octagon with his arms raised in the celebration will be etched in fans’ memories for a long time.

Diaz won the clash with Conor after being in serious trouble in round 1. Diaz was on the mat and doing his best to ensure McGregor who was on top of him didn’t get a clean shot.
In the second round, Diaz began utilizing his check right hook to keep McGregor at bay. In half of the second round, Diaz had gotten on the offensive mode. His left had McGregor dazed. The Notorious one did manage to muster a flurry of offense but Diaz himself continued punishing McGregor.
At 3:47 McGregor who was being punished by hard shots initiated a takedown, which would prove to be his undoing. The commentators cited Diaz’s wrestling abilities which are exactly what he put to use to close out the fight with a rear-naked chokehold in the second round.
The arena was buzzing but the adulations seemed to be more of shock. The shock that Diaz had tapped Mcgregor. The audience was certainly on the Irishman’s side throughout the fight. This was evident right from the time he walked into the MGM Grand. Every move of his in the octagon was met by a cheer. His left which opened up Diaz in the third minute of the first round saw the decibels among the audience raise a few notches.
The audience resembled a horde of angry buzzing bees when Diaz walked out and was introduced, so it is obvious that fans were hoping for Conor to win. One who wasn’t even supposed to be there, however his fighting spirit was evident. Even after being busted he called for more.
Diaz was not supposed to take on Conor McGregor
2 weeks before this Diaz wasn’t even scheduled for the card. He got a chance after McGregor’s original opponent Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of the fight due to broken foot.
Other fighters were approached. Jose Aldo declined the chance to fight McGregor citing a lack of preparation time. One can’t fault him as he would have to put in some serious training having been beaten by McGregor in just thirteen seconds the last time around. Frankie Edgar declined due to injury.
After watching this fight, they must have been wishing they took it up. Granted that they wouldn’t have had the same skillset Diaz used to win. But who knows, it could have been them instead of Nate Diaz who shocked the world at UFC 196.
