With UFC 248 done and dusted, and time remaining for UFC 249, the UFC public relations team is trying to make sure that the audience is excited for the action in between. Consequently, it has dropped an amazing promo on Leon Edwards. “Rocky” is scheduled to Tyron Woodley on 21st March.
Leon Edwards seems like the forgotten star in a stacked UFC Welterweight division. The Jamaican-born fighter is riding an eight-fight win streak. He has racked up wins over the likes of Gunnar Nelson, Donald Cerrone and former champ Rafael dos Anjos. But his name isn’t receiving the hype it rightfully deserves.

However, this fight will be the first main event that Edwards is part of. A Birmingham native, Leon relocated to the UK when he was just five or six years old. He had a rather tough childhood as his family struggled financially. And when that got coupled up with the culture of gangs, it provided the perfect catalyst for a young boy to take up the wrong path.
But Edwards found solace in football as a teenager. However, as he grew up, the love for football switched towards MMA. Consequently, he found his way towards the UFC. And now he may just be one step away from knocking on the doors of UFC gold.
Leon Edwards vs Tyron Woodley may serve as the No. 1 challenger fight
Edwards will face the former champ Tyron Woodley in the headliner of UFC London. If he can get past Woodley, he may very well punch his ticket to a title fight. Even though with the presence of Jorge Masvidal, a title fight as his next match up may not be a guarantee. Edwards has already fought and successfully defeated most of the fighters in the rankings, except the top 5.
One of the biggest reasons why Leon isn’t that big of a name is the, rather fast, rise of his contemporaries in the 170 pounds division. Jorge Masvidal’s stock rose immensely last year. Part of it had to do with his backstage brawl with Leon Edwards. Meanwhile, Colby Covington is always the centre of attention with his verbal tactics. And if all of this wasn’t enough, Conor McGregor made his return to the Octagon by moving up to welterweight. The Irishman’s future is not at all certain. But his persona is such that his name plunges into the title contention, right away.
Leon’s wrestling dominated style of fighting is also not the one that grabs the attention of a fan who isn’t a lot into the sport. His win streak is full of fights that have been classified as ‘wet blankets’. But then this was also the case with Kamaru Usman, the current kingpin of the division.
Do you think Edwards deserves a title shot if he wins over Woodley next week?
