The NRL is reportedly set to edit and relaunch its 'Simply The Best' 2020 season promo after some backlash from the rugby league community.
Featuring the infamous Tina Turner song Simply The Best, which was used 30 years ago to promote the NRL, the 2020 advertisement revived the nostalgia from yesteryear and put a fresh spin on the old version ahead of the upcoming season.
The TV ad includes iconic moments in rugby league history, such as the Super League war, the 1997 Newcastle Knights' triumph, Benji Marshall's flick pass, the founding of the Gold Coast Titans, and Cronulla Sharks' first premiership victory.
According to News Corp, a "sharper" version of the TV ad could be re-released as early as Wednesday after some backlash about the content of the advertisement.
"I was surprised that certain elements of the campaign were interpreted the way some people have," NRL chief commercial officer Andrew Abdo said.
"You have to respect that. We want to make sure we're focusing on the positives and the original intent of the campaign which is to reflect on a remarkable 30 years in a remarkable sport."
Abdo said they were not "given a directive to change it", but they are simply "reacting to the way some people interpreted elements".
"This is about getting people excited for the season. This is not a political campaign. Our intention is not to create a political debate," Abdo said.
"We want to live up to our mantra that everyone is welcomed and everyone is welcomed to their opinion. If people didn't think it was an accurate portrayal of course we will change it.
"It's not because we've been told it. We are listening to our fans.
"We are changing elements that people feel portrayed a negative."
