An Olympic gold medalist in wrestling and the UFC bantamweight champion, Henry Cejudo is one of the finest fighters in the sport. However, hundreds of athletes will have to wait for another year for an opportunity to join Cejudo in history as Olympic medalists. As the Olympics have been postponed as a response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“We agreed that a postponement would be the best way to ensure that the athletes are in peak condition when they compete and to guarantee the safety of the spectators.”- The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe
Cejudo came out with a statement in support of the International Olympic Committee’s decision to postpone the Olympic Games.
“I think postponing the Olympics is the right thing to do. I mean if you don’t postpone the Olympics, there’s 10,000 athletes that compete, that are at the Olympic village from all over the world. Just think it’s the right thing to do right now.”- Henry Cejudo
The 2008 freestyle wrestling gold medalist understands what it takes to reach the world’s greatest sporting stage. He also understands how devastating it must be to lose an opportunity to represent one’s country and earn laurels.
“They’re going to have it. They’re going to have it in 2021 it seems like but I just think for the sake of the world, it should be postponed,”- Henry Cejudo
Henry Cejudo Feels This Time May Be a Gift to Several Athletes
In addition, Cejudo feels this will give athletes more time to train. It may also give athletes suffering from injuries and health issues time to heal. Therefore they may be able to compete in the tournament when it finally takes place.
“For those athletes who are possibly hurt or need more time. I mean they’re going to have it now. Which is such a good deal for a lot of people that go through injuries and whatnot.”- Henry Cejudo
“So, it’s a tough decision but it’s the right decision. I’m just glad I got my gold in ‘08 without no problems.”- Henry Cejudo
Cejudo, the youngest American wrestler to win a gold medal had one of the most improbable runs in Olympic history. Skipping out on wrestling in college, Cejudo focused all his attention on competing in the international stage instead.
Henry Cejudo is slated to take on Jose Aldo in Sao Paulo on 3rd May at UFC 250. Do you think The King of Cringe will be able to defend his UFC bantamweight title?
