Carlton may have been tipped by many to climb up the ladder in 2020, but not according to AFL legend Leigh Matthews.
After David Teague replaced Brendon Bolton, the Blues surged in the second half of the season, but Matthews explained why he isn't convinced by last season's stretch.
"I don't think they (Carlton) are going to play finals in my view," he told Sportsday.
"Five of the last seven they won were: Freo, Swans, Suns, Crows and St Kilda, who all weren't going that good in the last bit of the year.
"Nevertheless, I think they have removed themselves from being the bottom of the ladder chopping block. Sometimes that's the first step.
"I reckon they're closer to bottom four than finals."
The Blues play the Brisbane Lions in their final pre-season hitout, and have been bolstered by the return of star forward Mitch McGovern.
"The high-performance staff have done an amazing job getting him up and ready," Blues assistant coach Cameron Bruce said.
"He's been getting a really good block of training in and we're excited about him performing well."
