PHENOMENAL! Daniil Medvedev Roars Back From 2 Sets Deficit to Defeat Marin Cilic at Wimbledon Championships 2021 R3

It was the third round of the Wimbledon Championships 2021 and fans witnessed a five-set marathon there. World No.2 Daniil Medvedev made an incredible comeback against Marin Cilic and defeated him in five sets. The final scoreline of the match was 6(3)-7(7), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

Set-1: Daniil Medvedev loses a close tie-breaker

Marin Cilic began the set on a high as he won the first game quite easily. However, Daniil Medvedev equalized it pretty soon and brought the scoreline to 1-1. The one who served continued to win until Cilic broke in the sixth game and made the scoreline 4-2.

However, Medvedev broke back in the following game and made the scoreline 4-3 again. He won the subsequent game again to level the scoreline at 4-4. This continued till the set finally reached the tie-breaker.

In the tie-breaker, it was Cilic who took the early lead and didn’t look uncomfortable anywhere. Thus, he won the tie-breaker 7-3 and thus won the set 7-6.

Set-2: Marin Cilic strikes back yet again

Serving first, it was Medvedev who took the first game quite easily this time. However, Cilic won three straight games after this as he broke in the third game. As a result, he was able to establish a 3-1 lead over the World No.2 player at the end of the fourth game.

Medvedev tried really hard but was not able to match the Croatian’s level. Interestingly, he failed to win even a single break-point in this whole set.

Cilic broke yet again in the ninth and won the set 6-3 on his first set-point. Thus, he was now leading 2-0 at the set scoreline.

Set-3: Daniil Medvedev makes an incredible comeback

Serving first, Cilic won the first game by winning four consecutive points. However, Medvedev gave a nasty response to him as he too won the next game after winning four straight points. This made the scoreline 1-1 and in a similar fashion, it soon reached 2-2.

However, what happened afterward stunned almost everyone. Medvedev broke in the following game, won the next game on his serve, and then broke again to make the scoreline 5-2.

Even though Cilic broke back and made the scoreline 5-3 in the subsequent game, that was not enough. The Russian broke yet again and won the set 6-3.

Set-4: Marin Cilic loses his momentum

Medvedev got off to a great start in the fourth set as he won the three straight games after breaking in the second one. It clearly appeared that Cilic lost his momentum and didn’t even present a good fight in front of him.

He soon finished the set quickly in 34 minutes without allowing Cilic to break. The Russian won the set 6-3 again and was now heading to a huge comeback at the Wimbledon Championships 2021.

Set-5: Daniil Medvedev seals off the closing set

Medvedev has gained a lot of momentum by this point of time and broke in the very first game of the fifth set. He carried forward his flow and established a 2-0 lead over Cilic at the end of the second game. Interestingly, the Russian broke yet again and then went on to win his serve game as well. As a result, he was now leading comfortably at 4-0.

The World No.2 player broke for the third time in the set and was now just one game away from entering the pre-quarters of Wimbledon 2019. However, Cilic broke in the sixth game to avoid being bageled by Medvedev. He even won the next game and reduced the margin to 5-2.

Medvedev regained his momentum and with the help of some beautiful forehands, finally won the set 6-2, and thus conquered the match.
