Corporate Sports Championship has blockbuster opening day – finals date to be announced

The UAE’s premier corporate sports event, Corporate Sports Championship, held in partnership with the Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Police and Great Place To Work, got off to a stunning start in Dubai today as over 700 athletes, representing 32 of the UAE’s leading companies, and cheered on by 500 spectators, took part in over 20 sports and activities at the state of the art Swiss Scientific School. Highlights on Day 1 included thrilling football matches, lightning rock-climbing times and undefeated badminton heroics. Following the postponement of the second day of competition, a new date for the knockouts and finals will be announced shortly. “The opening day was a real step up on our inaugural Championship last year,” said Corporate Sports CEO, Mr Mohammed Al Husary, “with the athletes and family members who came along to support them all enjoying the stunning facilities, vibrant atmosphere and high standard sporting endeavour of The Ultimate Sports Experience.” “From the basketball court, to the football pitch, to the cricket arena, competition has been intense but friendly with sportsmanship high between all our competing companies. “As today attests Corporate Sports Championship is the optimal platform for business networking, with the aim of relationship-building and better cross-networking for gov-private sector partnerships in the UAE clearly on show.” In the hotly contested Football tournament the outstanding teams on Day 1 were Dubai Customs, Dnata, RTA and Dubai Police, who won three of their four matches with a combined tally of 25 goals for and just 2 against. (7-1 Atkins 1, 10-0 v Kingspan 1, 7-0 Al Zahra Hospital, 1-1 ZEROFAT). But the game of the day was definitely DAFZA edging out the reigning overall champions du 1-0 with a goal in the last minute. In Badminton Naffco were the outstanding team with all three teams – Jeffin Jose, Ruth Cabacaba, Jomin George, Jocelfelma Sarniento, Abhi Viswan and Hiba Khan – remaining undefeated through 21 games. The leader in Rock-Climbing is Atkin’s Erhestas Sipaviciho with a stunning time of 29.18 seconds, just ahead of Santesh Khadka from Kingspan with 30.76 seconds. In Basketball eClub lead the way with three out of three on day one (43-2 Dial-A-Battery, 43-17 Dubai Health Authority, 26-14 Al Bayader) while Naffco, UAS, du, and Emirates all have two. In a topsy-turvy Group A of the cricket tournament PwC 1 upset hot favourites Naffco 1 66-4 in the day’s opening game before losing to RTA 1 57-40, while RTA 1 were then defeated by Naffco 1 68-17. The other group leaders were Century Financial, eClub and Naffco 2. Group A in Beach Volleyball was also a nail-biter with du, ZEROFAT, and Dubai Police tying on top with two wins and one loss each, while UAS, BCG, Amity University, Dial-A-Battery, Driven Properties and Naffco all well placed to reach the quarter-finals. In Table Tennis, where a massive 114 games were completed on Day 1, the leading contenders were Karim Mohammed Elbahrawy from eClub, Muhamed Faheem from du and Neel Thakkar from Century Financial, who all remained undefeated. In the female Fitness Challenge, consisting of a 1000m row, squats, push-ups, burpees and finishing with a 200m run, the outstanding performer on day one was BCG’s Sofie Stewart with an impressive time of 14:55, followed by Alexandra Doll also from BCG with 15:31, just ahead of DHA’s Noha Al Masrouri in 15:36. In the very taxing male Fitness Challenge ZEROFAT’s Ali Alkoori leads on 16:33 with DHA’s Abdulrahman Sultan just 11 seconds behind in 16:44. In Foosball Century Financial 1 clinched Group A with three wins from three matches, while in Group B BCG are also undefeated as are Naffco in Group C. Finally Boston Consulting Group (BCG) took out the first title on offer with Lorenzo and Stephan winning the Padel Tennis, with PwC’s Sidanth and Gilles second and BCG’s Alvano and Hussan in third. In Archery the female tournament was won by Sawsan Alqawi from UAS, with Ayken Sadikova from PwC and Dial-A-Battery’s Summaya Amad third. The action continues tomorrow at 8am with the prize-giving ceremony set down for 5.30pm promptly where over AED200,000 prizes will be handed out by Mr Al Husary.
