Aussie boxer Liam Wilson just announced himself to the world with a savage highlight reel knockout in only his sixth professional fight.
Wilson, 23, stepped into the ring against Venezuela's Jesus Cuadro, 34, in the National Boxing Series and put out his lights with a brutal left hook on Saturday night in St Kilda.
Cuadro was unconscious from the moment it landed.
https://twitter.com/ausboxing/status/1233853698213679105?s=20It was a stunning ending to the super featherweight bout, especially given that Cuadro (18-7) had never before been knocked out. In his previous fight, Cuadro went the distance with new IBF super featherweight Joseph 'Jo Jo' Diaz.
Aussie boxing great Barry Michael branded Wilson's left hook "one of the best I've ever seen".
"Liam Wilson just put the world on notice that he's coming, he's another Australian future world champion without doubt," Michael said on Fox Sports.
"This guy has never been knocked out and he was asleep for five minutes."
Wilson improved his record to 6-0 (four knockouts). Commentator Ben Damon said that the Aussie's dazzling punch was "a shot that will go around the world".
"He is asleep and he is not getting up. That is as stunning a victory as you will see by a man in just his sixth professional fight," Damon said on Fox Sports.
"That is a massive shot from Liam Wilson and Jesus Cuadro has not moved.
"The perfect left hook from Liam Wilson, who has the boxing world at his feet and has just said to the entire super featherweight division, 'I am ready'."
Wilson is a Queenslander who is highly rated within Australian boxing. The legendary Jeff Fenech recently predicted that Wilson would "soon" become a world champion.
That was just before he claimed the IBF youth world title in his division, with a unanimous decision win over Argentinian southpaw Mauro Perouene on the Jeff Horn vs Michael Zerafa II undercard in Brisbane last December. Wilson decked Perouene in the first round with his left hook before winning 100-89, 99-90 and 100-89 over 10 rounds.
"Liam Wilson is an amazing young talent who I think is going to go all the way ... can be world champion soon," Fenech said.
Australia is blessed with elite fighters in the lighter divisions.
Andrew Maloney won the interim WBA super flyweight world title last year, while George Kambosos Jr will in May fight Lee Selby in an IBF lightweight title eliminator, for the right to face the winner of Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez. Jason Maloney copped a heartbreaking split decision loss while fighting for the IBF bantamweight world title in 2018.
