'Outrageous' Sam Kerr goal lifts Chelsea to FA Cup glory

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has scored a brilliant second-half double, including a sublime goal off a chip kick, to lead Chelsea to victory in the women's FA Cup final, as the Blues won a domestic treble for the first time.

The Western Australian's epic display lifted Chelsea to a 3-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium in the final of a competition that was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Fran Kirby had given Chelsea a third-minute lead.

Chelsea also won last season’s women’s Super League title and the League Cup.

Kerr's first goal saw her zig-zag into the 18-yard box as she beat Lotte Wubben-Moy, before proving too skilful for 'keeper Manuela Zinsberger at her near post.

The 28-year-old then executed a phenomenal chip kick over the head of the Arsenal 'keeper to seal victory.

"Champions don't make excuses, or become victims or look for anybody else to manage them," Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said of Kerr.

"Sam takes responsibility, and every time I listen to her and every time I watch her perform every day, she's in charge, she's in control of making sure that she sets the standards for herself, and that's what I admire about her. There was no way she was going to be on the losing team today. She sets that tone in such a way that I've rarely seen."

The official women's FA Cup Twitter account posted: "That's outrageous!".

"Pure class," Chelsea's official account wrote.

The match took place exactly 100 years to the day since England's Football Association banned women from playing football on league-affiliated grounds because it deemed it “most unsuitable” for them to play the game. The ban lasted nearly 50 years.
