Sadly, America saw its soccer legend, Carli Lloyd, hang her boots in 2021. However, another American legend, Allyson Felix, is also nearing her retirement, preparing to draw the curtain on an extensively rewarding career in track and field.
Notably, Felix became the most decorated American athlete in 2021, with 11 Olympic medals to her name. Earlier, Allyson had made it clear she had no intentions of competing in the Paris Olympics; however, now she might have hinted at the last race of her career.
Allyson Felix is excited about World Championship coming to the USA
The 35-year-old first stepped on the Olympic track in 2004, during the Athens Olympics. Notably, in the last Olympic outing of her career this year, Felix came home with two medals- a gold, and bronze.
While the USA has produced some of the world’s top athletes like Allyson, the nation has hosted no edition of the World Athletics Championship. However, next year in 2022, America will host its first championship in Eugene, Oregon, United States.
In a recent interview, Allyson revealed there is an optimistic chance of her competing in the World Championship in 2022. Allyson said, “Yeah, I’m still trying to figure out what exactly it looks like. We have World Championships in the US for the first time so that’s really interesting to me. So just really trying to think about how I kind of want to wrap things up.”
After being a dominating and unstoppable force on the field for years, it will be tough for Allyson to step away. Further opening up about the feeling of retiring, she said, “I’m a very competitive person. I love just getting on the line and knowing that the best athletes in the world are to my left and to my right. And so I think for sure, that’ll be the thing, going to competitions and enjoying those moments of really competing against others.”
Women athletes to look out for in 2022
In a power pack 2020 Tokyo Olympics, some new and some old stars grabbed the spotlight. Undoubtedly, American star Sha’Carri Richardson will look for redemption in 2022, while her rivals and current world’s fastest women in the 100m race, Elaine Thompson Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce will look to break their own records.
In the 400m race, Olympic champions, Shaunae Miller and Marileidy Paulino will give Allyson Felix a tough competition again. Surely, Allyson will try to outclass everyone in what might be the last outing of her career.
2022 will see some intense competition between the terrific women runners. Do you think the World Championship 2022 will be Allyson’s last race?
