Former Coach Reveals the Issues He faced With Tiger Woods

Sean Foley is one of the most well-known swing coaches on the PGA Tour. He has worked with players like Justin Rose, Cameron Champ, and even Tiger Woods in the past. Moreover, Foley was with the legendary Woods for about five years, but sadly, wasn’t able to get the best out of him. However, Tiger managed to win five events in 2013, and it was the only successful run he had under Foley.

But to be fair to Sean Foley, back injuries and driver struggle marred most of his tenure with Woods. He recently opened up about the criticism he received for his coaching style, following his disappointing tenure with Woods.

Sean Foley believes he probably over-coached Tiger Woods

The prominent swing coach Sean Foley recently appeared on the Off Course with Claude Harmon. There he revealed his experience of coaching Tiger Woods and admitted that he has committed mistakes. “I would say, at that time, I was still too methodological,” said Foley.

Moreover, he said that he couldn’t understand what Tiger was going through in his personal life. He probably underestimated the state that he was in during that period. Hence, it hampered Tiger as a player as well.

“So I think that really shows that when you go from being invincible to visible, it’s really difficult,” Foley continued. “And so I think I over-coached him in the sense that I thought a lot of the issues were technical, more so than where they’re at. But that being said, I could say that about everyone I’ve coached. You don’t get it right all the time.”

Meanwhile, Sean Foley is well-known for his extreme technical knowledge of golf swing. However, becoming too technical sometimes hampers the growth or consistency of a player. Hence, Foley started receiving plenty of criticism, and the duo finally parted ways in 2014.

In his parting statement, Woods thanked Sean for his help as a coach and a friend. Notably, Foley recently also revealed that they are still very close with each other.
