Aussie closes in on Moto2 world title

Australia's Remy Gardner has all but secured the Moto2 GP title after the penultimate race of the season.

The 23-year-old won the Algarve Grand Prix, but a second place finish to Raul Fernandez means the title race will go down to the final event of the schedule.

Gardner took 25 points for winning the race and now has, in the MotoGP website's own words, "one hand and four fingers" on the world title.

As they head to Valencia next weekend, Gardner has accumulated 305 points for the season to Fernandez's 282.

That 23 point buffer means that Fernandez would have to win the final race of the season and Gardner finish lower than 13th.

Excluding when he crashed in the USA, Gardner's worst finish of the year is seventh.

"The weekend started off quite chaotic, but I was finally able to overcome the discomfort to my rib well to get this important victory," Gardner said afterwards.

"I am happy with how everything turned out, and I hope that in Valencia we can acheive what we have been wanting for so long."
