No athlete in the UFC in 2020 experienced the same level of a boom in fame as Khamzat Chimaev did. ‘Borz’ entered the UFC as an undefeated prospect and in just a month became one of the biggest names in the promotion. Three consecutive jaw-dropping wins against the likes of John Phillips, Rhys McKee, and Gerald Meerschaert established himself as a fan favorite.
After three wins, fans demanded that Chimaev be tested against a top-ranked welterweight. The UFC obliged and matched him up against Leon Edwards for a fight set to take place in December 2020. However, the fight was canceled not once but thrice. COVID-related complications kept Chimaev out of action for a year. His return fight was an extremely interesting matchup against a dangerous striker in Li Jingliang at UFC 267.

Chimaev maintained all throughout fight week that he would eat his opponents and take his head off. As soon as the fight started, Chimaev wasted no time in going for a takedown. Although Jingliang fought the takedown valiantly, he ultimately found himself on the ground.

‘Borz’ was then able to secure his opponent’s back and flattened him on the canvas, after which he started landing shot after shot, all of which ‘The Leech’ absorbed without any return. Once ‘Borz’ recognized his opponent was tiring out, he quickly switched to a rear-naked choke. ‘The Leech’ refused to tap and was choked unconscious by Khamzat Chimaev.
The 26-year-old has now secured his fourth straight win in the UFC and has absorbed little to no damage in all of his fights. ‘Borz’ stated in his post-fight interview that he was coming for everyone in the division and sent an ominous message to the 170-pound division.
If Chimaev maintains the same level of activity, he did last year when he joined the UFC, it will not be surprising to see him step in as a short-notice replacement should anyone fail to make a fight at UFC 268 just a week from now.
