It has been a while since fans last saw Serena Williams on the court. While playing at the Wimbledon Championships 2021, she injured her hamstring, and hasn’t made a comeback since then. Serena has been searching for her 24th Grand Slam since her triumph at the 2017 Australian Open, and has come close on various occasions.
Even though Serena Williams recently turned 40, she still has a lot of tennis left inside of her. However, many observers believe that she’s been able to continue for so long because she only plays at Grand Slams.
Martina Navratilova highlights that playing only majors is a big advantage for Serena Williams and the ‘Big Three’
In a recent podcast of ‘The GOAT- Serena’, tennis legend, Martina Navratilova talked about how the sport has been much easier for Serena, Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer. She believes that now, they only play at the Grand Slams which is a definitely a big luxury for them.
“It’s no coincidence that right now we have the four people that won the most titles, other than Steffi Graf, Novak Djokovic, Roger, Rafa, and Serena because that’s all tennis has become is about the majors. The other tournaments are basically played practice,” said Navratilova in the podcast.
Navratilova mentioned that the other tournaments apart from the Slams have just become practice tournaments for Serena and the ‘Big Three’. The hosts and Martina discussed that their limited involvement outside of the majors has contributed to their longevity.

Navratilova compares her time with the current situation in tennis
Navratilova holds the most Grand Slam titles if doubles, mixed doubles, and singles titles are included. She discussed how things were different when she was on the tour and how tennis has now become centered around the Majors.
“You know, I would play between 7-8 matches every season- singles, and then of course, I would play doubles and everything as well. So the mentality was different, and then, of course, the tour was huge. The tour was bigger prize money than the majors,” added the 18-time Grand Slam champion.
As of now, Serena Williams’ return date on the tour is uncertain. Will she be able to win her 24th Grand Slam title before bidding goodbye to the sport?
