Collin Morikawa is one of the most promising rising stars in the golf world. His top class game, absurdly incredible technique, and consistency have helped him secure a permanent name for himself. However, even someone as gifted and talented as Morikawa can make a mistake.
Recently, Collin Morikawa had a very relatable moment at The Zozo Championship that was held in Japan over the previous weekend. At the event, Morikawa finished T-7, with a respectable score of 5-under par.
Meanwhile, local favourite Hideki Matsuyama snagged the title, his first in front his home-crowd. He topped the leaderboard with an enormous 5 stroke leader over the two runners-up. However, during the tournament, Morikawa did something he had never done before. Let’s see what went down on the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club.

Collin Morikawa shanks a shot: a first for him
On Saturday, the best ball striker in the world had an embarrassing moment. Really relatable and normal for us, but a pretty big deal for a PGA tour professional. On the third round on the par-5 sixth hole, Morikawa shanked a shot.

Later, he said with a laugh, “Well, I did something in my career that I haven’t done yet, was shank a shot. I don’t think many people know this. I was in the middle of the fairway on 6, the par 5.”
He also said, “Yeah, shanked a pitching wedge straight in the trees. So really good way to start the day after being 1 under through five.”
However, there are going to be many more firsts in his young career. And this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a poor shot by a professional. In line with this, many golfers turned to support Morikawa. Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, and even girlfriend Katherine Zhu sent consolatory messages to him to make light of the situation.
On the contrary, the 24-year-old witnessed a great moment during the week. He jumped over Dustin Johnson in the OWGR rankings to secure his highest ever world rank 2. This is a great feat for the youngster who turned professional in 2019.
