Will Buxton Hits Back at Critics of Lewis Hamilton Following History-Making F1 Win in Russia

On his 281st race start in Formula One, Lewis Hamilton reached the unprecedented milestone of achieving 100 victories at this year’s Russian Grand Prix. Although many lauded the Briton’s achievement, some fans couldn’t hold themselves back in downplaying his accomplishment in Sochi.

The latter prompted F1 journalist Will Buxton to take to social media in order to share his thoughts on the reigning world champion’s latest milestone.

The 40-year-old is a prominent figure in the F1 paddock. One can often find Buxton interviewing the drivers following sessions, or giving his insights on various developments across teams and drivers.

The last six laps of the Russian Grand Prix saw heavy showers drench the Sochi Autodrom. While Hamilton benefitted from a strategic move to intermediate tires, Lando Norris refused to make that move. This saw him lose grip, and a maiden race win as Hamilton took over to make history and maintain Mercedes’ perfect streak on this track.

Following the 53-lap race, a few section of fans didn’t take the 36-year-old’s victory very well. With comments on Twitter gathering pace, Buxton mentioned how they couldn’t accept his accomplishments.

He tweetedAs I said on the post race show yesterday, 100 race wins is a staggering achievement and figure. Seems incredible there remain those who don’t or won’t appreciate the genius in his craft and the brilliance of his talent. We’re lucky to live in the era of @LewisHamilton.”

He also responded to those who credited all of Hamilton’s accomplishments to Mercedes’ superior package. In another tweet, Buxton wrote“It’s funny how those who trot out the “best car” argument conveniently overlook the role Lewis played in the development and creation of the cars that have become the dominant force in the sport.”

While some fans reacted positively, others decided to send negative reactions to the 40-year-old as well. Some users spoke about fortune shining on him in Sochi, while a few still believed Mercedes gifted him the perfect car.

After his performance in Sochi, the Briton looks more confident than he did prior to last weekend. With seven races to go, the Briton leads Max Verstappen by just two points in the driver’s championship.

Given his current run of form, Hamilton looks back on track to make more history in 2021. However, Verstappen isn’t among those to give up easily, and will look to bounce back in Turkey. Despite the races that remain, expect the 2021 driver’s champion to be crowned after the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
