Novak Djokovic Announces Unfortunate News Following US Open 2021 Heartbreak

After a tough loss in the finals of the US Open to Daniil Medvedev, world no.1 Novak Djokovic has been spending time with his family in Serbia and is occupied with other activities related to his foundation.

Post the defeat in New York, it became almost clear that the Serb wouldn’t want to comeback on the ATP tour soon. Even though there was a Masters tournament scheduled at Indian Wells in October, the chances of Djokovic playing the event were always thin.

Novak Djokovic decides to skip the upcoming Indian Wells tournament

Confirming the same, Djokovic announced his withdrawal from Indian Wells few minutes ago.

I am sorry I won’t get to see my fans in Indian Wells and play in the desert, my favourite place to go. I hope to see you next year!”, tweeted the Serb.

This decision from Djokovic will be fair opportunity for Medvedev to lay his hands on the BNP Paribas Open title and move closer to the Serb in terms of ranking points. The Russian will have a lot of points to defend post Indian Wells and it’s almost impossible to win all the tournaments.

Even though the Russian has a slim chance of overtaking Djokovic to become the year-end world no.1, this feat expects Medvedev to win at least a couple of big titles going forward. If the Serbian decides to stage his comeback at the Paris Masters, then Medvedev will have to stiff competition from the Serb.

The race for year-end no.1 ranking might turn out to be interesting post Djokovic’s withdrawal

Djokovic entered the US Open facing the pressure of becoming the first male singles player to reach 21 major titles. Despite winning all the six matches comfortably, the Serb showed signs of vulnerability in the final against Daniil Medvedev.

With scores of fans rooting for Djokovic to create history, the world no.1 couldn’t bring out his A-game when it was needed the most. On the other hand, Medvedev took complete advantage of this fact and started to play more freely from the baseline.

The Russian posed a lot of questions to Djokovic in that final and the latter struggled to find a way to beat his opponent. Even after losing the first two sets, fans were expecting Djokovic to make an incredible comeback but Medvedev was too good by then.

Despite losing the contest, Djokovic made an emotional post-match speech as the Arthur Ashe crowd embraced him with loud cheers. With the Serbian withdrawing from Indian Wells, the race for the year-end no.1 ranking could become interesting provided Medvedev wins as many matches as possible.
