‘Extremely Disappointed’ – Rory McIlroy Sheds Tears During Post Round Interview Over Ryder Cup 2020 Performance

This Ryder Cup seems like it belongs to the Team USA, who have dominated and won on the first two days. With Day 3 underway, it seems the Americans have no plan on giving up. Rory McIlroy, who managed to win his singles match against Xander Schauffele, got emotional after the match. There were tears in his eyes, especially as McIlroy felt disappointed for not being able to do more.

He was not his own self for the first two days, losing his first three matches. Two of them were with Ian Poulter, one with his friend and Ryder Cup rookie Shane Lowry. As a result, McIlroy was out of Saturday’s foursomes (morning), which became the first session McIlroy missed in his entire Ryder Cup career.

However, he managed to turn his performance around with a 3&2 win against Schauffele. Let’s take a look at what the 32-year-old had to say about his time playing with this team.

Rory McIlroy turns emotional after singles win at Ryder Cup

While speaking to the media, McIlroy spoke about the Ryder Cup, tearing up. “I’ve been extremely disappointed that I haven’t contributed more for the team. I’m glad I got a point on the board today for them but it’s been a tough week”. He added that the more he plays in the Ryder Cup, he realizes it is currently the best event in golf – and he loves being a part of it. “I can’t wait to be a part of many more. Yea, it’s the best”.

For McIlroy, there is no greater privilege than to be a part of the Ryder Cup teams, either American or European. “It’s an absolute privilege. I’ve gotten to do this six times. They’ve always been the greatest experiences in my career. I’ve never really cried or got emotional over what I’ve done as an individual. I couldn’t give a sh*t”.

He continued that it is phenomenal to be a part of the Ryder Cup team, and he is indeed happy about it. He once again mentioned how disappointed he is, and wishes to come back and do more for them. “We’ll give it another go again”.

McIlroy also spoke about losing, accepting that it is not a nice feeling. Even though this weekend could have gone better for the Europeans, the American Team did play extremely well, dominating throughout while the Europeans did not fight back enough. McIlroy admitted that he also wanted this for Padraig Harrington, who would have loved to win a Ryder Cup in his career.
