William Byron Expresses His Faith in Crew Chief Rudy Fugle Ahead of Cup Race at Michigan

The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series is close to wrapping up the regular season. With two races left until the playoffs, Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron is aiming to snatch as many playoff points as possible. His next opportunity comes during this weekend’s Cup race at the Michigan International Speedway.

What gives him an advantage is the fact that crew chief Rudy Fugle has enjoyed much success at the track. Most of them came in the Camping World Truck Series, namely six top-5 finishes and six top-10s at Michigan.

Byron said. “I think he knows how to get around that track. He knows what it looks like to be competitive at that track, so I honestly feel like we are just going to continue to improve. I think we are on the right track to have success and we should be pretty fast.”

William Byron is looking forward to the race

Byron competed in the 2016 Truck Series at the Michigan International Speedway. The 23-year-old started that particular race in third position, but he ended up finishing in fourth place.

Ever since he graduated to the Cup Series, the Hendrick Motorsports driver has scored one top-10 and four top-15s in six starts in Michigan. Since he is in one of the best cars on the grid, William Byron will hope to deliver his strongest performance at Michigan.

“Because we have run well this year at similar type racetracks – Texas and Pocono come to mind – in terms of similarities, I think that those two tracks are going to suit us for this race,” Byron said. “We have a good notebook to look at and our car should be fast, so I am excited to see what progress we made since the last big oval.”

Ever since he and Rudy Fugle linked up, they managed to record a number of excellent results. This includes 1 win, 2 poles, 8 top-five finishes, 15 top-10s and three stage wins. At the moment, the driver sits fourth in the NASCAR playoff standings and is well on his way to reach the playoffs.
