UPSET! Olympic Gold Medalist Stuns Garbine Muguruza at National Bank Open 2021 R2

It was the second round of the National Bank Open 2021 and fans witnessed a huge upset there. Tokyo Olympics 2020 Gold medalist Katerina Siniakova thrashed World No.9 Garbine Muguruza in three sets to advance to the pre-quarters. The final scoreline of the match was 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.

Set-1: Katerina Siniakova shocks Garbine Muguruza

Garbine Muguruza began the set on a really high note as she won the first game quite easily. She broke in the next game and was now leading 2-0 at the end of the second game.

However, Katerina Siniakova broke back and then won the subsequent game as well to equalise the scoreline at 2-2. She had already gained the momentum and didn’t let it go. Even though the World No.9 player saved two break-points in the fifth game, Siniakova capitalised on the third one and broke yet again to take the lead.

She broke yet again in seventh game and was now just one game away from taking away the first set. Serving for the set, she didn’t take much time and won the set 6-2 in 37 minutes. Interestingly, she won six consecutive games in this set.

Set-2: Muguruza bagels Siniakova

Muguruza got off to a great start in the second set as well as she won the first game. She broke in the second game and established a 2-0 lead over her opponent yet again. However, she didn’t repeat her earlier mistakes this time.

As a result, after winning the third game, she broke again in the fourth game. She won the fifth game too and was now inching towards a bagel.

The Spaniard didn’t miss as she capitalized her first set-point to make a phenomenal comeback. As a result, she won the second set 6-0 in 34 minutes.

Set-3: Final nail in the coffin of Garbine Muguruza

It was Siniakova who broke in the very first game of the third set and took the early lead. However, Muguruza broke back and equalized the scoreline at 1-1. Interestingly, Siniakova broke again and was broken back yet again by Muguruza. Thus, the scoreline reached 2-2.

However, after that, both the players won their respective service games before Siniakova broke and built a lead of 4-3 over Muguruza after the end of the seventh game.

She won the next game on her serve and broke for the fourth time in the ninth game to conquer the set 6-3. As a result, she won the match in three sets.
